Stephanie Stollar discusses the implementation of MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports) in reading instruction. She emphasizes the importance of assessing and addressing word recognition skills and language comprehension skills in a balanced way. She also discusses the role of special education in the MTSS model and highlights the need for proactive support in the early grades. Stephanie emphasizes the importance of evidence-aligned instruction and the need for team-based decision-making in the MTSS model.
The MTSS framework allows educators to bring the science of reading to life by using resources flexibly to meet students' needs. Implementing a MTSS system requires coordinated use of screening, diagnostic, and progress monitoring assessments. This session will help educators select and use assessments in teams to build tiers of prevention and intervention that get results. Participants will learn the characteristics of each type of assessment and how the data can be used to plan classroom reading instruction and supplemental reading intervention.
This session will shed light on common myths and provide actionable alternatives to common MTSS implementation mistakes and misunderstandings. By framing Tier 1 instruction as risk reduction, participants will learn how to improve reading outcomes for all students.
